Nothing really says summer in the Wood River Valley quite like mountain biking the renowned trail system that outlines and intersects the area.

Summer camps held by Sturtevants and Galena Lodge will develop and flaunt camp participants’ skills.

Camp dates for Sturtevants’ mountain bike camp are from June 10-13, July 8-11 and Aug. 5-8, meeting 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Thursday.

The cost is $350 for four days or $100 per day with ages ranging from 8-10 and 10-12 depending upon skill level.

The popularity of the camp has grown each year throughout the valley. Camps are tailored to ability levels.

“As kids get out there, the word of mouth is getting better,” said camp coordinator Chris Rybak. “The coaches that run the camp are fun. The kids learn and push themselves.”

Kids will ride the Ketchum pump track and trails such as Forbidden Fruit, Corral Creek and the Galena Lodge network.

Instruction focuses on braking skills, shifting, body position and technical abilities.

Transportation is provided by Sturtevants—participants must be ready for pick-up at the shop’s Ketchum location at 9 a.m., and they will be dropped off there at 2 p.m. each day.

Another great option for mountain biking is the Galena Lodge camp open to kids 8-12.

The camp is held Monday through Fridays in three different weeks, which are July 8-12, July 15-19 and July 22-26.

Each weeklong camp costs $350.

Transportation to Galena Lodge is included in the camp—participants must be ready for pick-up at the YMCA at 9:30 a.m., and they will be dropped off there at 3 p.m. each day. Lunches and snacks are also included. For participants without bikes, a mountain bike rental costs $50.
