Male and female Barrow’s goldeneye ducks gather on the Big Wood River in Hailey near Carbonate Mountain on Saturday. Barrow’s goldeneyes swim and rest on the water, diving for extended periods to forage on invertebrate prey. Antic courtship behaviors are often seen during calm days in winter. As a diving duck, goldeneyes must race across the water to build up momentum in order to take flight. “The Barrow’s goldeneye are beautiful ducks. Some are full-time residents of the valley,” said Wayne Clayton of High Desert Sports in Hailey. The ducks are known to live up to 18 years.
