Wood River High School sophomore Asher Stern went 5-0 with three wins by decision and two pins to win the 145-pound division of the Minico Red Halverson junior varsity prep wrestling tournament Saturday in Rupert.
Stern won championship round wins by 8-2 decision and 3:54 fall, won the quarterfinals 5-2, pinned his Snake River foe 3:34 in the semi-finals and won the first-place match 5-2 over Cael Van Sickle of Kuna.
He was one of 10 Wood River wrestlers compiling a 14-16 record. Senior Isaac Gonzalez, the only Wolverine competitor in the varsity tournament, went 0-2 at 106.
Going 2-2 and dropping their third-place matches were junior Drake Humphreys at 170 pounds and junior Jacob Drummond at 106.
Freshman Michael Hurd went 3-2 at 120 pounds, winning twice in the consolation round and falling 10-0 in the consolation semi-finals. Freshman Grant Green was 2-2 with two pins at 98 pounds. Also competing for Wood River were Daniel Servin at 170, Olin Patterson at 160, Sawyer Newhouse at 220 and Emilio Loya at 195.
