47th Winterstart Nordic races on Sunday at Galena
The Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation cross-country ski program along with Galena Lodge are hosting the 47th annual Winterstart Nordic races on Sunday, Dec. 8 along the Galena Lodge trail system 23 miles north of Ketchum. Starting time is 10 a.m. for the free event, with registration from 8:30-9:45 a.m.
Course distances will be 9 kilometers, 6k and 1.5k. Last year, there were 80 competitors paced at the 8k distance by Peter Holmes (19:07) and Katie Feldman (21:42) of the SVSEF.
Christmas Classic regional gymnastics here Dec. 7-8
Spirit ‘n Motion Athletic School (SMAS) hosts the third annual “Christmas Classic In Sun Valley” regional gymnastics meet Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 7-8 for over 300 regional athletes. Site is Wood River High School gym in Hailey.
Spirit ‘n Motion is home to several of the top ranked gymnasts in the state and Region 2, and all are excited to compete locally. “We are beyond thrilled to bring this event and all the athletes and their families to our community,” said Amanda Wilson, Head Coach at SMAS.
Most of the SMAS athletes will compete Saturday at 8 a.m. in Xcel Bronze Level 2/3 and at 10:30 a.m. in Xcel Gold, Platinum and Diamond. They’ll also take the floor Sunday at 9 a.m. in Xcel Silver.
Spectators are invited.
SVYH girls travel to California for Lady Ducks meet
Nine Sun Valley Youth Hockey female ice hockey players enjoyed the Lady Ducks Fall Classic tourney Nov. 29-Dec. 1 in southern California at Lakewood Ice Arena.
Daisy Buxton, Maddy Dunn and Lola Randolph skated for the Idaho Select Team in the 19U AA division.
Six other SVYH girls swept their five 14U AA games with a 5-0 record and 19-2 goals-against in a short-bench tournament. Goalie Grendel Sprong boasted three shutouts for Idaho Vipers AA and a 0.41 average in her five victories.
The Sun Valley girls made up a majority of the 14U team. Helping coach Idaho 14U Vipers were Tyler Davis-Jeffers and Bill Sprong of SVYH.
Maeve O’Connell (9 goals) and Charlotte Davis-Jeffers (8 goals) topped the local scorers. Others were Avery Burrell (1 goal/6 assists), Devon McAvoy (0/4), Laura Daves (0/1) and Amanda Dunn. Olivia Cooper and Bryn Haugen of Boise, and Amanda Pouchnik of Moscow, rounded out Idaho 14U.
Local cross country runners make All-District, All-State
Sun Valley Community School seniors Johnny Hagenbuch and Sydney Palmer-Leger achieved All-State recognition for their finishing times in the top 20 during the Idaho High School Activities Association State 1A cross country meet Saturday, Nov. 2 on a 3.1-mile Pocatello course.
Hagenbuch and Wood River freshman Lizzie Lipman also made All-4th District for finishing in the top 15 during state-qualifying district meets.
