Winterstart Nordic races Saturday at Galena Lodge
The 46th annual Winterstart cross-country ski event has been scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 15 at Galena Lodge 23 miles north of Ketchum.
The 9-kilometer, 6k and 3k Nordic races begin at 10 a.m. at Galena Lodge. Entry fee is $10. Registration starts at 8:30 a.m. that day at the lodge.
The Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation is presenting Winterstart for all comers.
Register now for 2019 BCRD Youth Basketball
Registration for the Blaine County Recreation District’s 2019 Youth Basketball league is open through Jan. 8.
The popular coed program emphasizes skill development, sportsmanship and fun for boys and girls in kindergarten through sixth grades. The season starts in the middle of January depending on age group and ends March 7. Registration fee is $65. It includes instruction, team jersey and a participation award.
Depending on interest, programs are offered at gyms in both Ketchum and Hailey.
Coaches for the community program are all volunteer and critical to its success. The registration fee is waived for coaches’ children. Team sponsorship opportunities are also available. For information or to register, visit bcrd.org or call the BCRD at 208-578-2273.

Check out the Bend (Ore.) Elks Baseball Club’s Preseason Baseball Camp planned for January’s Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend Jan. 19-20 inside Bend Elks field house.
The camp director is former Wood River High School baseball star James Cordes of Bend, who is now Bend Bucks summer league head coach.
Sessions are Saturday, Jan. 19 (infield, outfield, hitting) and Sunday, Jan. 20 (pitching and catching). Times each day are 9 a.m. to 12 noon for 8-13 year olds, and 1-4 p.m. for ages 14-18. Cost is $90 per person per session, if registered at bendelks.com by Dec. 26.
One camp coach is 43-year-old Doug Davis, a 6-4, 215-pound right-handed starting pitcher from Sacramento who pitched in 306 major league games with a 92-108 mark for five clubs from 1999-2011. Another is Irish National Team coach Nick Lockwood, a high school All-American from Tampa who played four seasons in the Minnesota Twins organization.
