SVYH Squirts rally to win Idaho Falls tournament
Spotting Utah Grizzlies a 2-0 lead in the first period, the Sun Valley Youth Hockey Squirts (ages 9-10) stormed from behind to win 5-3 over Utah and capture the championship of the 2019 Idaho Falls Frosty Eagle Shootout youth hockey tournament.
Sun Valley piled up a 5-0 tournament record over three days, outscoring its opponents 30-7. Coaches of the title team were Ted Kelley, Frank Salvoni and Tim Price.
The Suns beat Idaho Falls Eagles White 4-1 Friday, blanked the Bozeman Ice Dogs 6-0 and outscored Boise Junior Steelheads 5-1 on Saturday, and earned their title game berth with a 10-2 victory over Idaho Falls Eagles Black later Saturday.
Utah Grizzlies also went 4-0 entering the championship game and jumped to a 2-0 first period lead. The Suns rallied for a 3-2 advantage, and Utah equalized at 3-3. But Sun Valley scored twice in third to win.
Suns players included Sutter Ellison, Hadley Elsbree, Hayden Gvozdas, Addee Hall, Jamie Kelley, Seth London, Henry Mahoney, Grason Martin, Leila McGrew, Jack McKenna, Bode Price, Cooper Salvoni, Will Swink and Liam Tempest.
Big Mountain skiers compete at Snowbird
Big Mountain Travel Team racers from the Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation competed on Snowbird’s Silver Fox run during recent International Freeskiers and Snowboarders Association (IFSA) meets on the Utah slope. Top results:

McCall Mountaineers prevail in Peewee home tourney
Five Peewee (ages 11-12) teams gathered at Hailey’s Campion Ice House Friday through Sunday for the annual Sun Valley Youth Hockey (SVYH) Peewee tournament. Carrying off the title with only three bench players were the McCall Mountaineers 4-1 over Sun Valley Black.
Harrison Miller and Zealand Wann of McCall scored two goals apiece and Mountaineer goalie Cade Salyer (10 saves) kept SV Black off the board until Elliott Burks poked home a puck in the third period. Earlier in the tournament, SV Black had beaten McCall 8-3.
McCall (4-1, 28-12 goals-against) and SV Black (4-1, 20-8) were the top two teams, ahead of Idaho Falls (2-2), Sun Valley White (1-3) and Salmon (0-4). In the preliminary 8-3 win over McCall, SV Black scorers were Luke Hebert (4), Simon Weekes (3) and Paxton Sammis.
SV Black defeated Idaho Falls 1-0 with Sammis delivering the game winner, assisted by Benj Fenn and Brody Tate. Goalie Kyan Bennett (28 saves) had the shutout. Scoring goals in SV White’s 7-0 win over Salmon were Stokely Gardner 4, Ryder Tate 1, Owen Tempest 1 and Richter Ellison 1.
In another match during the 11-game tournament, Simon Weekes of SV Black scored twice as Black nipped SV White 2-1. Owen Tempest scored for SV White.
Freeski Progression team at Snowbasin
Eight SVSEF Freeski Progression Teamers traveled to Snowbasin, Utah Jan. 26-27 for USASA slopestyle and Rail Jam events.
Winning age class gold in Sunday’s Rail Jam were Barrett Beyer and Zeppelin Pilaro.

Grommet Boys (ages 8-9): 1—Walker Woodring. 2—Barrett Beyer.
Breaker Boys (12-13): 1—Anton Holter. George Corkery narrowly missed a podium.
