Swimmers Deal, Canfield compete at Federal Way

Sun Valley 5B swimmers Zach Deal, 18, and Berkeley Canfield, 12, competed in sectional and regional championship meets during March at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way, Wash.

Wood River High School senior Deal, the SV5B team’s consistent high-point scorer, joined over 1,200 qualified swimmers at the elite Northwest Speedo Senior Sectionals, March 14-17.

Deal qualified in six events and raced to personal-best times in three disciplines during the preliminaries. Deal qualified for the finals in Men’s 100 breast, finishing 16th overall in 57.19 seconds.

Canfield joined over 800 other qualified competitors at her first Northwest Region Age Group Championships March 21-24. A seventh grader, Canfield qualified for two events, 50 free and 50 fly. She made finals in 50 free, finishing seventh with a personal-best 25.99.


Bennett moves up in pole bending at Shoshone rodeo

Wood River High School junior Payson Bennett earned her first points in barrel racing this spring and moved up to seventh place in the girls’ pole bending standings during the 5th District high school rodeo stop at Shoshone April 26-27.

Bennett finished sixth in Saturday’s pole bending (22.642 seconds) and was eighth in Friday’s pole bending go-around (23.660). In four rodeos to date, she has 12 pole bending points to rank seventh behind pole bending and overall leader Aspen Stinemates of Wendell. Bennett was sixth in Saturday’s barrel racing (17.965).

Also competing for Wood River at Shoshone were Dana Kriesien (19.696 and 19.940 barrels), Devon Peterson (21.158 and 21.868 barrels), Tori Thomas (19.968 barrels, 26.226 poles) and Chloe Deffe (24.553 barrels, 28.746 and 28.615 poles).

Next rodeo is May 3-4 at Jerome, followed by the Carey rodeo May 10-11. Stinemates is the current girls’ all-around leader with 102 points, five better than Kylee Evans of Gooding (97). Dietrich’s Wes Shaw, the bareback and steer wrestling leader, has a dominating boys’ all-around total (106).


Senior Connection Games return June 22

Registration is underway for The Senior Connection Senior Games returning Saturday, June 22. Organizer for a second year is Jovita Pina.

Activities include a golf tournament at The Valley Club, 8-ball tournament at The Casino in Ketchum, Dollar Mountain hill climb in Sun Valley, plus pickleball, swimming and cornhole bag toss in Hailey.

The event offers an opportunity for novice or returning athletes ages 50-and-over to compete in friendly and encouraging social environment. Registration deadline is June 14. Athletes may sign up for more than one event.
