Four Wood River High School wrestlers finished in the top five of their weight classes during the Great Basin Conference tournament Feb. 21-22 in Pocatello and qualified for the State 4A meet Feb. 28-29 at Ford Idaho Center in Nampa.
Senior Isaac Gonzalez finished third with a 3-1 record at 106 pounds including a 7-5 decision over Tyson Tatten of Twin Falls in the third-place match. Junior Jacob Drummond (2-2) also earned a state berth in the 106-pound weight class.
Freshman Grant Green (2-2) captured fifth place with a 46-second pin at 98 pounds and made state for the first time. Returning to state is senior Conner May (4-2) with a fifth-place 4-3 victory over Minico’s Daniel Vega at 152 pounds. May added 4-3 and 6-2 decisions and a 1:49 pin to his GBC record.
Wood River narrowly missed qualifying sophomore Asher Stern (3-2), who finished seventh at 145 pounds, and freshman Michael Hurd (2-3), who was eighth at 120 pounds.
Rounding out the nine-wrestler Wood River group for the 10-team GBC meet won by Century (379 points) over Jerome (290.5) and Minico (249) were Daniel Servin, Drake Humphreys and Sawyer Newhouse. Wood River ended with 56 team points—14 from Gonzalez and 13 from May.
