On a sunny and breezy afternoon, 1A athletes from 11 southern Idaho schools gathered at Carey’s Derrick Parke Memorial Field last Thursday for the Sawtooth Conference Championship track meet.
The Murtaugh Red Devils won the boys’ and girls’ team championships by substantial margins. Boys’ all-around winner Kade Setoki, a senior with 30.5 points, led the Murtaugh boys to a 66-point victory over second-place Carey Panthers.
Camas County sophomore Samantha McFadyen and Castleford sophomore Zailee Poulson shared the girls’ overall title with 38 points apiece.
McFadyen swept the 100-meter, 200m and 400m sprints. She won the 400m by over four seconds in a personal-best 1:00.90. Paulson won both hurdle events and girls’ high jump.
Camas County’s girls had a great afternoon. They placed second 37.5 points behind Murtaugh based on the efforts of McFadyen and up-and-coming ninth-graders Naomi Fredrickson, Leslie Staley, Laura Thompson and Alyssa Whittle.
The host Carey Panthers boasted five individual golds including junior Carson Simpson (11.40) bouncing back from a hamstring injury to win an extremely-close 100m dash.
Unfortunately, Simpson re-injured the hamstring in the 4x100m relay and is expected to be done for the season.
Carey’s senior shotput record holder Brittany Conrad won the shotput (36-6) and Panther senior Kodi Green took the discus gold (97-1). Senior Omar Morales led a 1-2-3 Carey discus sweep with a winning 120-11. Junior Brigham Parke captured the high jump (6-2).
Sun Valley Community School enjoyed a good day with senior Sophia Mazzoni cruising to the 3200m victory (12:54.20) by well over a minute. Senior Ted Yewer won the 400m in a personal-best 55.10.
The Cutthroats also tasted gold in the 1600m sprint medley relay by over one second with Jake Lunn, Ridley Lindstrom, Cash Dart and Yewer (3:58.40).
Second places on Thursday included SVCS’s Lunn 100m (11.50), Carey’s Bailie Morey 100m hurdles (17.10), Camas’ Colby Thompson 1600m (5:18.00) and Williamson discus (96-4, PR) and Carey’s Tate Squires discus (119-0, PR).
Other double winners were Castleford senior Shawn Poulson in the hurdles and Castleford junior Isaac Knudson in the 1600m and 3200m runs.
