Wood River High School basketball teams absorbed Great Basin Conference losses to visiting Preston and Pocatello on Saturday at the high school gym in Hailey.
Pocatello’s boys (9-2, 6-1 GBC) built a 33-20 halftime lead and outscored Wood River 59-36 Saturday evening.
The Indians out-rebounded the host Wolverines 35-27, committed only four turnovers and shot 50% from 2-point range. Isaac Brown led Pocatello with 14 points.
Wood River senior Johnny Radford (12 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists) left the game with a left knee injury in the fourth quarter. He was sore but walking Monday, and being evaluated by the Hailey trainer.
Radford (25.3 ppg) has improved his Wood River career scoring total to 998 points, just 53 points away from tying Brian Homer (1,051) for second place on the all-time Wood River career scoring list.
Other Wolverines were Davis Ros (8 points, two 3-pointers), Kade Heitzman (season-high 8 points, 4 rebounds), Brogan Ros (3 points), McCade Parke (3 points), Walter Kriesien (2 points), Tyler Petersen (4 rebounds, 2 assists) and Isaac Esparza (2 assists).
Wood River (4-6, 2-2 GBC) visits Burley (8-3, 4-1 GBC) on Wednesday, the Bobcats coming off a 49-39 home win over 5A Highland of Pocatello (3-8).
The Wolverines host Twin Falls (5-5, 3-2 GBC) on Friday, Jan. 17. Twin Falls picked up 46-45 and 54-44 home wins over Jerome and Century last week.
Earlier Saturday in a conference matinee, the Preston Indians (13-3, 7-1 GBC) surged ahead 41-20 at halftime and finished a two-day swing through southcentral Idaho with a 64-42 win over Wood River. Preston had lost 49-42 at Jerome on Friday night.
Wood River’s girls (5-9, 1-7 GBC) committed 37 turnovers but out-rebounded Preston 35-21 and got scoring from eight players against the Indians.
Junior forward Natalee Morse logged a double-double with a season-best 13 points and 11 rebounds. Other top efforts came from Sayler Peavey (11 points) and Sammi Brunker (5 points, 4 boards).
Hailey Meek (14 points) led Preston.
The Wood River girls visit Jerome (11-4, 6-2) on Tuesday and then host Canyon Ridge of Twin Falls (1-13, 0-9 GBC) on Thursday, Jan. 16 in Hailey, and plan to travel to Gooding (3-10) on Saturday, Jan. 18.
