Cross-country skiing and its devotees are on center stage this week in the Wood River Valley with the arrival of the Sun Valley Nordic Festival and 47th annual Zions Bank Boulder Mountain Ski Tour.

How about biathlon, which combines Nordic skiing with stops for target shooting? That’s on the schedule, too.

Sunday’s Sun Valley Nordic Center Expo from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Sun Valley Nordic Center will give people a free chance to sample Try It Electronic Rifle Biathlon along with skiing a short ski loop.

“It’s a cool sport. We currently have several active biathletes competing actively both here and abroad. I’m surprised we don’t have more of it here in the valley,” said event organizer Matt Gervase.

Sunday’s activity will give participants a sense of what it’s like to ski and then shoot, with an elevated heartbeat, said Gervase. Adults and children are welcome to use infrared rifles to shoot targets, in prone of in standing positions.

“We are interested in popularizing the sport within the Wood River Valley,” he said.

No sign-ups are needed. Come by the Nordic Center from 10-3 Sunday and try it.
