The city of Ketchum will sponsor the 16th annual Chuck Gates Junior Golf Tournament on Friday, July 19 starting at 1 p.m. at Bigwood Golf Course just north of Ketchum.

Besides the city, other sponsors include the Chuck Gates Youth Endowment, the Bigwood Golf Course and Bigwood Bar & Grill.

The $15 entry fee includes a barbecue following the tournament. Flights of three, six and nine holes are available, with an age range of 7-18.

For registration, contact Ketchum Recreation Director John Kearney at or call 208-726-7820 by Wednesday, July 17, at 4 p.m. Some golf experience is necessary.

Volunteer scorers are also needed and should contact Kearney directly.

“The endowment has been very beneficial to our program and department for more than 15 years,” Kearney said.

He added, “We also thank Roger Roland, president of the Board of Directors of the Chuck Gates Youth Endowment, for his work in raising funds and promoting youth golf throughout the valley.”

The Chuck Gates Youth Endowment was established in 2002 in honor of the late Chuck Gates, one of the founders of the Idaho Mountain Express.

Each year, Chuck Gates Youth Endowment invites top junior golfers to play in the Chuck Gates Tournament at Sun Valley Golf Course, which takes place in early June. The tournament, now in its 22nd year, raises money to support youth golf.
