The winner in the Big Fish competition was Mike Olsen, who brought in a German brown trout weighing 2.75 pounds, worthy of the $1,000 grand prize. Second place went to Mark Geske, third to Steve Carlson, fourth to Zach Sewell, and fifth to Matt Colesworthy. Proceeds from the event benefit the Camp Rainbow Gold organization, which provides camps and support for children with cancer. Cook, an Express photographer, said the organizers were still calculating proceeds and costs but expects that “several thousand dollars” will be sent to Camp Rainbow Gold. “It was a great event,” he said, noting that organizers hope to grow the competition for the 10th event next year.

The ninth annual John McClatchy “Big Fish” Memorial Fishing Derby at Magic Reservoir on Saturday brought out some 130 anglers of all ages under sunny skies. The event to honor former Wood River Valley resident McClatchy, a dedicated fisherman, was organized by his brother, Jim McClatchy, and longtime friend Willy Cook. Prizes of $1,000, $500, $300, $200 and $100 were awarded to anglers who brought in the biggest fish by weight.
