Led by two freestyle victories from junior Taylor Dorland and a women’s 400-yard freestyle gold medal, the Wood River High School women’s swimming team repeated as District 4/5 team champion Wednesday in Twin Falls.

Wood River got 18 points from Dorland’s 100- and 200-yard freestyle victories, and another 18 points from the 400-yard freestyle triumph by Dorland, sophomores Bridget Evans and Dana Kriesien and junior Maggie Deal.

In final team rankings, Wood River nipped Kimberly High School 103-101 after 22 events. In third place among the 10 women’s teams was Minico of Rupert (78). Twin Falls (71) and Century of Pocatello (65) were fourth and fifth.

First-year Wood River coach Samantha Sutton said, “All of the girls swam at least one personal record and helped contribute to our team’s points. They brought home the district title.”

Based on their district meet finishes, eight Wood River swimmers qualified in 13 events for the State 4A championships set for Nov. 8-9 at Meridian’s YMCA pool.

State qualifiers besides Dorland, Evans, Kriesien and Deal are juniors Brenann O’Leary and Sydney Smith, and, for the boys, sophomore Larsen Bier and freshman Ethan Hansen.

“We are hopeful our men’s 200-yard medley relay team earned a fast enough time to achieve a wild card position at state,” said Sutton. Besides Bier and Hansen, that team would include seniors Chris Davitt and Walter Kriesien.

Dorland (2:08.49) won the women’s 200 freestyle race by 0.65 seconds and ran away with 100 freestyle by 2.53 seconds with a time of 57.54. The women’s 400 freestyle relay victory was by 2.73 seconds.
