With limited practices because of a lengthy and successful football season, Carey School boys’ basketball players are eager for their home tournament this weekend on the Panther floor.
The Carey Holiday Tournament is Friday and Saturday, Dec. 6-7 with Carey hosting Valley of Hazelton, Challis and Mackay for boys’ varsity and junior varsity contests.
Carey, with only five practices after the end of football, traveled to Shoshone Monday for the 2019-20 season debut. In an evenly-played non-conference match, Shoshone prevailed 55-52 in overtime.
“The kids played really good defense and had 39 rebounds to Shoshone’s 27, but we didn’t shoot really well,” said Carey head coach Dick Simpson, who will be coaching his 500th game at the Panther helm this season.
Shoshone led 39-30 after three periods. Carey tied it 46-46 after regulation as senior Brigham Parke tallied 8 of his 13 points in the 16-9 fourth-quarter Carey comeback.
Carey shot 28% including 6-for-21 from 3-point land.
Brigham Parke (10 rebounds, 3 steals) finished with a double-double. So did Tate Squires (13 points, 10 rebounds). Drilling four 3-pointers was Hunter Smith (12 points, 7 rebounds, 6 steals).
Other contributors were Dallin Parke (8 points, 4 boards, 6 assists), Carson Simpson (5 points, 2 rebounds, 4 assists) and Sawyer Mecham (1 point). Carey had 20 turnovers and 13 steals.
Coach Simpson is optimistic because Carey’s top five scorers from last season are all returning this year. They tallied 94% of the Panther points in the 12-15 campaign.
Last year, Carey’s Carson Simpson was the Sawtooth Conference Co-Defensive Player of the Year. Top scorer Brigham Parke (16.2 ppg, 561 Panther career points) made All-Sawtooth first team.
Dallin Parke, now a junior, averaged 10.4 ppg, and junior Hunter Smith averaged 12.5 ppg as three Panthers scored in double figures in 2019.
At its home tourney, Carey’s varsity (0-1) opens Friday at 8:30 p.m. against Challis, preceded at 5:30 p.m. in the old gym with a Carey JV game against Challis.
The boys’ varsity consolation game is Saturday at 3:30 p.m. with the boys’ final at 6:30 p.m. Last December, the Challis boys defeated Valley 42-37 for the Carey title.
