Wood River High School’s swimming team opened its fall season a little shorthanded during the Aug. 24 Jerome Invitational meet at Twin Falls City Pool. But the Wolverines still did well as a team.
First-year coach Samantha Sutton said Wood River placed second out of eight competing teams, using only eight girls, and the Hailey boys finished fifth with four boys.
“Luckily, for our next meet (Sept. 7 in Rupert) we will have more eligible swimmers to help rack up some more points,” said Sutton.
In the 22-event Jerome meet, Wood River’s girls scored 106 points including three golds, trailing Kimberly (120) and 20 ahead of Minico of Rupert (86). Canyon Ridge of Twin Falls (91) won the boys’ meet, Wood River posting 53.
Junior Maggie Deal won the 200-yard Individual Medley by nearly two seconds, and Hailey junior Taylor Dorland captured the 100-yard butterfly by 1.59 seconds.
Winning the 400-yard freestyle relay by 11 seconds for Wood River were Dana Kriesien, Brenann O’Leary, Deal and Dorland.
The same foursome was second in the 200-yard medley relay, just 0.28 seconds behind the Kimberly squad.
In second place was the Wood River boys’ 400 freestyle relay with Alex Vallejo, Ethan Hansen, Walter Kriesien and Larsen Bier.
Third places went to Ethan Hansen (50 free, 100 backstroke), Taylor Dorland (500 free), Larsen Bier (100 breast) and Breann O’Leary (100 back). Fourths went to Dana Kriesien 200 IM, Molly Doyle 100 freestyle, Deal 500 free and Bier 100 free.
