Lizzy Lipman and Sage Holter

Posing at the Great Basin Conference meet last Thursday in Pocatello are Wood River High School’s state qualifiers, from left, Lizzy Lipman and Sage Holter.

Wood River High School cross country runners Lizzy Lipman and Sage Holter have been running close to each other for many of the prep competitions this fall, pushing each other for better results.

Now, they’ll be running for Wood River’s Wolverines at the Idaho High School Activities Association State 4A 3.1-mile race Saturday, Nov. 2 at the Portneuf Wellness Complex in Pocatello.

Lipman, a freshman, and senior Holter placed 11th and 12th of 110 Great Basin Conference girls Oct. 24 on the same Pocatello state course during the 10-school state-qualifying GBC 4A conference meet.

They qualified as individuals for the upcoming state competition in the Gate City.

Winning her third straight GBC girls’ title by well over a minute was Mattalyn Geddes of Twin Falls in 17:27.6. Lipman’s time was 20:15.2 and Holter clocked in at 20:16.5.

Coach Monte Brothwell was excited about their efforts as well as 17 other Wolverines.

He said, “On a cool, almost perfect day, we had 98% of our runners with new personal records. Our division was even harder than the

5A division competing there. The winner of 5A would have got 19th in our race.

“Lizzy Lipman and Sage Holter dropped a minute from last week’s times and qualified for state.”

Wolverine senior Anthony Corrales (17:22) placed 30th among 137 boys. Junior Dylan Heyrend (17:50) finished 45th.
