If the first piece of legislation introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives this year doesn’t pass, the biggest losers will be America’s voters as they lose a little more of their grip on democracy.
HR-1 should be on everyone’s radar.
Officially titled the For the People Act, HR-1 is a broad election-reform effort requiring paper ballots, early voting in federal elections and establishment of redistricting commissions.
House veteran Elijah Cummings, D-Md., calls it “one of the boldest reform packages to be considered in the history of this body.”
The bill would provide a federal match for small-dollar political contributions, require candidates for the top two federal offices to release tax returns, enhance disclosure requirements for some ads and contributions, and enforce the Foreign Agents Registration Act.
Anyone who has paid attention to presidential politics since 2015 will recognize the need for the reforms.
The bill’s provisions about what happens when it comes time to vote are the most critical parts. It would restore protections in the 1965 Voting Rights Act dismantled by the Supreme Court, which led to voter suppression through draconian voter ID requirements, fewer polling stations and less early voting.
It would make Election Day a federal holiday, thereby making voting easier.
Democracy depends on all citizens’ being able to trust that their votes count equally, that all voters can actually cast a vote if they want to, and that voters can know whom and what they are voting for.
So call or write your representatives and senators and tell them you support a healthy democracy and HR-1.

Sounds good but why did the SC dismantle it back then? The electronic vote is too easy to rig....needs to go. Clearer wording on ballot issues, truth in attack ads...all for the better.
Yeah, we need this to keep Russian agents and those successful business people from running. That way we can discourage some of the best most qualified leaders from running.
