A former fire chief from Colorado will step in Sept. 30 as interim chief of Wood River Fire & Rescue to replace current Chief Bart Lassman, who is scheduled to retire on Oct. 3.

Lassman said the Wood River Fire District unanimously approved the hiring of Ron Bateman last Thursday. Bateman will fill the position until a full-time chief is hired. Lassman said that process will likely be concluded sometime in December, with applicants being narrowed down and ultimately decided by the Fire District commissioners.

Bateman retired as chief from the Front Range Fire & Rescue Department, which serves Johnston, Milliken and Weld counties in Colorado, where he served for 10 years.
