Wood River Valley residents and those in neighboring counties can sign up now for a U.S. Transportation Security Administration Precheck enrollment center that will be at the Friedman Memorial Airport the week of June 24.

According to a press release from the airport, the center will be open Monday, June 24, through Friday, June 28, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2-6 p.m. Those interested in enrolling are encouraged to schedule an appointment for the in-person visit.

TSA Precheck allows participating passengers to go through security lines faster by not having to remove their shoes, belts and light jackets or having to remove laptops and liquids from their carry-on luggage.

According to TSA, 92 percent of Precheck passengers waited on average less than five minutes to go through a security line in May, nationwide. In larger airports such as in Los Angeles and Houston, TSA has separate lines for Precheck passengers, allowing for speedier wait times. In addition, minors 12 and younger are permitted to use the TSA Precheck lane while traveling with an eligible parent or guardian.

While the program is only offered in the U.S., it is offered in more than 200 airports and by more than 67 airlines, including the three airlines that fly in and out of the Hailey airport—Alaska, Delta and United.

The 10-minute, in person appointments include a background check and fingerprinting and require that the applicant bring at least one form of ID. A full list of acceptable IDs and alternative options can be found at the TSA website.

“We are excited to host this TSA Precheck enrollment center as a service to our local community and airport customers,” said airport Manager Chris Pomeroy in a press release issued last month. “We have listened to the customers and in partnership with TSA, we are pleased that travelers departing SUN are able to experience the full TSA Precheck screening experience.”

The cost to apply for the fast-pass version of airport security is $85 and the membership is valid for five years. Airport passengers also have the option of making an in-person appointment at the Magic Valley Regional Airport in Twin Falls for the enrollment center that will be there from June 17-21.
