The Idaho Attorney General’s Office is warning residents about a new text-based scam connected to worldwide shipping company FedEx.
According to a press release from the AG’s office, the ploy works by a victim receiving a text, purportedly from FedEx, with a tracking code and a request to set delivery preferences. The text includes a link to Amazon, and if fully executed, will lead to customers to inadvertently signing up for expensive services they’ll be billed for later.
“Emails and robocalls have long been the preferred medium for scammers to make contact with potential victims,” Attorney General Lawrence Wasden said in the press release. “But these criminals have refined their text-based scams in recent years, and the FedEx example is a good illustration of their expansion into this medium.”
FedEx says it does not send unsolicited texts or emails to its customers and anyone who believes they have received this scam should report the text to email@example.com.
