A Vermont man died while skiing on Bald Mountain on Tuesday afternoon, but Blaine County Coroner Russ Mikel said the death is likely the result of natural causes and was not the result of an injury or trauma.

Mikel said attempts to perform CPR were unsuccessful in reviving Robert Sahlman, 70, of Waitsfield, Vt., after he began to struggle while skiing down the mountain. Sun Valley Resort spokeswoman Kelli Lusk wrote in an email that the Sun Valley Ski Patrol responded to an unresponsive man on Lower Olympic run at 12:15 p.m. They transported him to the River Run base area, where he was met by Ketchum Fire Department paramedics.

Mikel said Sahlman’s next-of-kin has been notified of his death, which was pronounced at 1 p.m. Tuesday.

Mikel said he and his staff were assembling medical records and weighing a decision to conduct an autopsy to determine cause of death.

“Right now, it looks like natural causes,” Mikel said Wednesday afternoon.
