Nearly 1,000 people have taken the Blaine County School District’s community survey, and the board of trustees is hoping to pull more responses before the poll wraps up on Dec. 21.

As of Tuesday morning, the Idaho School Boards Association, which is administering the survey, had 966 English-language and 24 Spanish-language responses in hand, according to the association’s leadership development specialist, David Brinkman.

“We’ve reached the parent group really, really well,” said Trustee Lara Stone, who worked with Brinkman to draft the template. “Now, we need to reach the other groups.”

That means driving people unaffiliated with the schools to the online link, and putting paper copies where they are. To start, the district printed 200 English and 200 Spanish forms for north county resident Barbara Browning prior to Tuesday’s board meeting. Browning has been distributing the English version of the questionnaire around Ketchum and Sun Valley, stacking piles at the Ketchum Visitors Center, City Hall and police station; Sun Valley City Hall and police station; Ketchum businesses; and, soon, The Community Library.

District Communications Director Heather Crocker is working to distribute the forms, too, supplying them to major employers valleywide, reaching out to school leadership classes and finding space at other valley hubs, including the Blaine County offices.

The district is trying to partner with leaders in the local Latino community to distribute the survey in Spanish, Crocker said. On Tuesday, trustees bemoaned its difficulty reaching those families so far.

“Though I am very appreciative that we have so many English surveys in, I’m disheartened we have so few Spanish responses,” Vice Chairwoman Kelly Green said.

Paper copies in both languages are also available at all Blaine County public schools and the district office at 118 W. Bullion St. in Hailey. They can be returned to locked boxes at any of those sites, or mailed directly to the Idaho School Boards Association at Box 9797, Boise, ID  83707-4797.
