Best-selling author Julie Lythcott-Haims will deliver the commencement address to the Sun Valley Community School’s class of 2019, school spokeswoman Anneliese Turck announced on Friday.
A former Stanford University dean, Lythcott-Haims’ first book, a handbook for parenting entitled “How to Raise and Adult”, hit The New York Times’ best-sellers list in 2015, and inspired one of the most popular TED Talks of 2016, with more than 4 million views. Her second book, “Real America: A Memoir,” examines her personal experience as a black and biracial person. It was published in 2017.
“Ms. Lythcott-Haims is an important voice in our national conversations around parenting trends, the well-being and resiliency of our children, college admissions and finding the right fit—all of which are prominent conversations within our school community,” said Head of School Ben Pettit. “Further, she is vital voice in the conversations around opportunity, diversity, equity and inclusion in educational settings.”
Open to the public, the Sun Valley Community School commencement will take place on Sunday, June 2, at 1 p.m. in the Sun Valley Pavilion. Thirty-nine seniors will graduate, and an exchange student will receive a certificate for completion, Turck said.
“It’s a privilege to join the Sun Valley Community School seniors as they say a final farewell to a community they hold so dear,” Lythcott-Haims said. “From my brief interaction with them, I know them to be clear, kind, and bold, a wildly eclectic bunch, each part thinker, part doer, part dreamer, all eager to chart their own course in this one precious life. I cannot wait to meet them in person!”
