A 5-year-old girl was found on the shore of Redfish Lake on Friday morning and later died at a hospital in Boise and a man’s body was later recovered from the lake Saturday morning after a sonar search indicated a body below the surface.

According to the Custer County Sheriff’s Office, bystanders pulled the unconscious and not breathing girl, Claire Tanney, from the water just before 11 a.m. Friday and began administering CPR as first responders from the Sheriff’s Office, Stanley Emergency Services and Ketchum Fire Department responded to the scene. The Stanley Swift Water rescue team was also called.

Claire was transported via Air St. Luke’s to St. Luke’s Wood River Medical Center before being transferred to St. Luke’s Boise Medical Center, where she died.

While on scene, first responders noticed a pair of men’s boots on the shore and an overturned kayak in the lake. Through sonar, the Department of Fish and Game detected what was believed to be a body below the surface of the lake. The Bingham County dive team was called to search the lake and searched for roughly 20 minutes on Friday evening before returning at 8 a.m. Saturday and recovering the body around 10:40 a.m., according to the Custer County Sheriff’s Office. The man was later identified by the Sheriff’s Office as Christopher Joseph Tanney, 31.

Both victims were from Mountain Home, Idaho.
