Hailey Police Chief Jeff Gunter remains on paid administrative leave this week and is under investigation by the Idaho State Police for an undisclosed reason.

Assistant Chief Steve England is serving as acting chief of police.

The city of Hailey issued a press release on Jan. 29 indicated that the city is “following protocols” when “sensitive issues arise,” and has offered no further comment.

Idaho State Police Maj. Bill Gardiner confirmed on Monday that his office was investigating Gunter, but offered no further comment, suggesting that the Mountain Express seek answers from Hailey Mayor Martha Burke.

Burke has stated that she will not provide details.

Hailey City Attorney Christopher Simms said Wednesday that he would not comment on the investigation.

“This is a personnel matter,” Simms said. “Therefore there are confidentiality and privacy concerns.”

Simms expects the investigation to take “some time” and said that the city will receive a report upon its completion.

It is uncertain whether Gunter will be reinstated to his position as chief.

“The city will make a decision based on the report,” Simms said.
