The roll occurred shortly after noon Tuesday as 39 students, two coaches and a driver headed to a track meet, according to the School District. The incident occurred on U.S. Highway 26 just west of Richfield, according to Idaho State Police.

     As of 3 p.m., School District spokeswoman Health Crocker said five students had been transported to a hospital via helicopter, five were transported via ambulance and three were in transit to a hospital. Students were being transported to a few different hospitals, she said, including St. Luke’s in Jerome, St. Luke’s Wood River, St. Luke’s Magic Valley, North Canyon Medical Center in Gooding and a fifth hospital in Pocatello. Other students were either released to parents or taken back to Carey on a separate bus.

     Crocker said the bus driver, Richard Mecham, was transported to a hospital via ambulance while the coaches, Lane Kirkland and Lee Cook, were driving themselves to a location to be assessed.

     Carey Principal John Peck was at the scene of the incident Tuesday afternoon, according to the district, while Superintendent GwenCarol Holmes was at Carey School. Crocker said Holmes was not available for comment Tuesday because she was monitoring the status of students and making sure all were accounted for.
