The number of students absent from school is up from this time last year, according to numbers from the Blaine County School District.
An average of 140 students per day—spread across eight schools—were absent in January. Without them, the district averaged about 3,250 students in school each day.
At the same time last year, there were about 60 to 70 students out each day, the district said.
BCSD this week sent out a letter to parents with information about cold and flu season and advice for when to keep children home from school.
The district is asking parents not to send their children to school if they have had a fever of 100.4 degrees or higher or have experienced vomiting or diarrhea within the past 24 hours, if they are experiencing continuous coughing not relieved by cough medicine or if they have strep throat and began taking antibiotics less than 24 hours ago.
