The Sun Valley Community School’s Parents’ Association will host a screening of the 2019 HBO documentary “True Justice: Bryan Stevenson’s Fight for Equality.”

As the title implies, the film chronicles the achievements of famed Alabama attorney Bryan Stevenson, founder and executive director of the Equal Justice Initiative, which guaranteed legal defense to anyone in Alabama sentenced to the death penalty, Alabama being the only state in the union not provide defense to death row inmates.

A recipient of the MacArthur “Genius” Grant, Stevenson has also worked to overturn several wrongful convictions and mounted campaigns that have led to significant Supreme Court rulings, most notably in Miller v. Alabama and Montgomery v. Louisiana.

The documentary—directed by six-time Emmy-winner Peter Kunhardt—will be presented at the Community School’s theater at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 23. This event is free and open to the public.
