Douglas Rankin has been appointed the first executive director of the Argyros Performing Arts Center, which is under construction on Main Street in downtown Ketchum.
According to a news release from Sun Valley Performing Arts Inc., from 1986 until 2016, Rankin was founding president of the Irvine Barclay Theatre in Irvine, Calif. He oversaw the creation and operation of the 756-seat theater, a partnership with the city of Irvine and the University of California. Its programs include music, dance, world events and theater.
For a decade prior to that, he was founding executive director of the Woodstock Opera House in Woodstock, Ill. He led the restoration and then operations of an 1890 National Register historic property with a 450-seat theater, horseshoe balcony and other public
spaces, similar to the Argyros.
“We knew The Argyros deserved, and believed we could attract, an esteemed leader from the performing arts center and presenting world,” said Tim Mott, vice chair of Sun Valley Performing Arts’ board of directors and the Argyros project leader.
Rankin said he “couldn’t help but be attracted to the Argyros’ ambitious vision of adding value to an already vibrant cultural scene.”
“Because of the diversity and warmth of all the people that my wife and I met during a recent visit, we can easily imagine a happy transition from Pacific to Mountain time!” he said. “We are personally honored to have been invited to become members of such a great community.”
