According to the Idaho Department of Fish and Game, the fifth wolf killed in the Southern Mountains zone, which includes the Wood River Valley, was likely a member of the Phantom Hill pack. This would mean that two wolves from the pack have been killed since the wolf hunt opened in this zone on Oct. 1.
The wolf was shot last Tuesday near Galena Summit, according to Fish and Game's Magic Valley Regional Biologist Regan Berkley. Berkley would not give exact details regarding the location of the shooting, but said that it was within the Phantom Hill pack's home range, which stretches from around Trail Creek north to Alturas Lake.
Another member of the pack was killed at the beginning of the month, with around eight or nine wolves remaining in the pack.
A total of 80 wolves have been killed in Idaho since the hunt began. The total quota for the state is 220.
