One wolf has been killed in the state's Southern Wolf zone, which extends east across the Pioneer, White Knob, Lost River, Lemhi and Beaverhead mountain ranges to the Montana border, according to the Idaho Department of Fish and Game's Web site. Hunting in this zone opened on Oct. 1.
No additional information on the shooting is available at this time.
Ten wolves can be killed in that zone, home to the Phantom Hill wolf pack, which became well known to the public last winter as it traveled through the Wood River Valley.
To date, 28 wolves have been killed in Idaho, with a high number of seven taken in the Sawtooth Zone north of the valley. The total quota for the state is 220 and another 35 wolves can be killed by the Nez Perce Tribe.
In Montana, where wolf hunting opened on Sept. 15, 11 wolves have been killed with the state's quota set at 77.
