Sawtooth United Premier gears for Europe trip

Support sought for 14-day summer soccer trip

Eighteen girls from The Community School of Sun Valley and Hailey's Wood River High School are headed to Europe for 14 days this summer as part of the 2006 Sawtooth United Premier soccer trip to Denmark and Sweden.

The local Sawtooth United Premier program, started in 2003 by Laura and Greg Gvozdas of Ketchum, is now seeking financial support from local businesses and individuals to help cover the costs of the two-week European journey.

Sponsorships are necessary to help purchase team uniforms, to assist with staffing costs and to minimize the fees for the local players. Tax deductible donations are set at $750-and-up for the Gold Level, $500-750 for Silver Level and $250-$500 for the Bronze Level.

The sponsors will be mentioned in publicity and will receive a plaque with team photo and donation level. Contact Laura Gvozdas at sawtoothpremier@hotmail.com

This year's travel team includes 11 players from last year's Wood River girls' varsity soccer team coached by Greg Gvozdas and seven players from The Community School girls' varsity soccer team coaches by Kelly Feldman.

Players committed to the trip include four current Wood River juniors who also traveled to Europe in July 2004 as part of the inaugural Sawtooth Premier trip to Holland. That trip forged a lasting bond between players traveling from the two valley schools and contributed to their teams' success in the following fall season.

Juniors are Calley Brown, Kacie Femling, Brianna Hull-Mullins and Danielle Smith.

Sophomores from last fall's WR team are Caiti Leo and Michelle McMurdo, plus Cutthroat players Cody Curran, Jessie Curran, Emily Eshman, Kathryn Farmer, Hannah Hennessy and Chloe Lynn.

The six freshmen are Jazz Campbell from The Community School plus Wood River ninth-graders Laura Elgee, Aimee Evans, Delaney Fox, Sam Johnson and Elsa Sweek.

Each player has committed to paying $2,700 for the July 15-29 trip to the Dana Cup in Copenhagen, Denmark and the Gothia Cup in Gothenburg, Sweden. They are the two largest youth soccer tournaments in the world. Prior to the trip the team will complete monthly fitness training and team bonding activities.

The Sawtooth United Premier staff for the trip includes Greg and Laura Gvozdas, who both played soccer for DePauw University in Indiana; Wood River assistant girls' coach Rob Butterfield; and John Koth of Koth Physical Therapy, who will act as the athletic trainer.
