Two Hailey men have been charged with possession of methamphetamine, a felony, for allegedly having the drug in their possession during a traffic stop in south Hailey the evening of July 31.
Osvaldo Guadalope Arenas and Luis Fernando Duran, both 18, were formally charged with the crime at an initial court appearance on Friday, Aug. 1, in Blaine County Magistrate Court. Both men were also charged with the misdemeanor crime of possession of drug paraphernalia with intent to use.
Ketchum attorney Andrew Parnes was appointed public defender for Arenas and Hailey attorney Christopher Simms was appointed public defender for Duran. Preliminary hearings for both men were scheduled for Aug. 12 before Magistrate Judge Daniel Dolan.
Both defendants are currently free on $5,000 bond each.
Hailey police Lt. Steve England said Monday that Arenas and Duran were arrested at about 10:30 p.m. on July 31 following a traffic stop on state Highway 75 near its intersection with Countryside Boulevard.
England said the stop was made because Arenas, southbound in a 2000 Ford Explorer, was “driving erratically.”
England said questioning and searches led to discoveries of small amounts of methamphetamine on both suspects. Also, he said, both men possessed pipes used to smoke the drug.
Both men were taken to the Blaine County jail.
