Last week, some filmgoers heard how dams were the four-letter dirty word mucking up our rivers and fish. This week, it’s cows getting hit with mud pies.
The film “Cowspiracy: The Sustainability Secret,” is a feature-length environmental documentary that follows a filmmaker as he uncovers what he claims is the “most destructive industry facing the planet today,” and investigates why even the world’s leading environmental organizations “are too afraid to talk about it,” according to advance press on the film.
Carter Hedberg, of the Hailey-based Western Watersheds Project, has announced that the film is making its Idaho premiere Tuesday, July 22, at 7 p.m. at the Magic Lantern Cinema in Ketchum.
The filmmakers, Keegan Kuhn and Kip Andersen, will attend the premiere. After the film, there will be a Q&A with the filmmakers as well as a panel discussion with some locals who are involved in environmental and food-sustainability issues.

According to press information provided by Hedberg, Kip Andersen’s environmental awakening came as a result of a film about global warming called “An Inconvenient Truth.” After seeing the film, he began to recycle religiously, turn off lights constantly, shower infrequently, and ride a bike instead of driving. It was in that process that he began to believe that animal agriculture is the leading cause of environmental destruction.
Now the graduate of the Cal Poly San Luis Obispo school of business is the founder of the Animals United Movement, a pending 501(c)3 organization focused on creating films and media promoting sustainability, compassion and peace for all of Earth’s inhabitants.
Cohort Keegan Kuhn is a videographer, documentary filmmaker and musician living in the San Francisco Bay Area. He has worked with nonprofit organizations and been involved in social justice movements for virtually his entire life. His film career has taken him as far as the remote interior of Alaska to document modern homesteaders, to the high deserts of the American West filming the nation’s remaining wild horses, to rural agricultural communities and dirty urban streets.
“Cowspiracy: The Sustainability Secret” makes the case that animal agriculture is the leading cause of deforestation, water consumption and pollution, is responsible for more greenhouse gases than the transportation industry, and is a primary driver of species extinction, habitat loss, topsoil erosion, ocean “dead zones” and virtually every other environmental ill.
