Just last week in the valley, two people took their own lives. But for every one that completes the act, there are countless more being dissuaded and helped thanks to volunteers willing to train their ear to help.
But the economic conditions that drive many to desperate places do not exclude the Crisis Hotline, and to help spread the word and raise some money, actress/author Mariel Hemingway will speak Saturday, June 28, at a cocktail party.
The Crisis Hotline continues to provide the only 24-hour crisis intervention and referral service for residents and visitors in the Wood River Valley.
For 27 years, the hotline has been a lifeline for people of all ages who find themselves in a crisis situation; suffer from depression; are in need of resources such as food, shelter or legal, medical or mental services; or need emotional support.
Each call is confidential, anonymous and free. Whether it’s a family, personal or work issue, hotline volunteers listen and offer resources to help, enabling callers to take positive steps forward.
The event is free, but donations are encouraged. Funds go to coordination and direction of hotline staffing, volunteer training, community resources and community outreach.
The event will be at a private home. Call the Crisis Hotline office for more information at 788-0735.
