Over 1,400 triathletes take the Boise 70.3 test

    Over 1,400 triathletes got hot, wet and a little tired Sat-urday during the Boise 70.3 Ironman competition that started at high noon and fin-ished in late afternoon.
    Finishing well before dinner time was the men’s winner, professional triathlete Brent McMahon, 33, of British Co-lumbia, Canada.     His final time of 3.57:33 for the 70-3.mile test was 14 seconds ahead of Trevor Wurtele, 35, of Vernon, B.C.
    A pro triathlete for six years, 2012 New Orleans Iron-man 70.3 king Wurtele was timed in 3.57:47 in Boise.
    The triathlon test featured a 1.2-mile in Lucky Peak Reser-voir, a 56-mile bike ride from there into Boise, and a two-loop 13.1-mile run along the Boise Greenbelt to Julia Davis Park.
    Among the finishers Satur-day were veteran Ironman ath-letes Matt Wellner, 36, and Bob Lowry, 56, of Hailey.
    Wellner placed 205th overall and 34th in the Men’s 35-39 age class with a time of 5.18:46. His splits were 39:47 swim, 2.39:45 bike and 1.53:11 run.
    Lowry finished eighth in the Men’s 55-59 age class with a time of 5.34:28. He was the 262nd male finisher and 330th overall. His splits were 36:47 swim, third in his class, plus 2.51:38 bike and 1.59:37 run.
    Saturday’s women’s winner was also a Canadian, 41-year-old Melanie McQuaid with a final time of 4.24:07 for 17th place overall. Her splits were 29:09 swim, 2.22:26 bike and 1.29:53 run.
