Representatives from Ketchum and Sun Valley have agreed to restore about $800,000 in annual funding to the Sun Valley Marketing Alliance—the goal set when the organization was inaugurated in 2010.
According to a news release from the two cities, the plan calls for Ketchum to contribute $450,000 and Sun Valley $350,000.
Sun Valley has cut its funding to the organization since 2011, when it provided $400,000. It allocated only $209,000 for fiscal year 2014. Those cuts have been protested by Ketchum officials.
The new agreement, announced by the cities Thursday, is subject to approval by both city councils.
“This is a new era of cooperation,” Sun Valley Mayor DeWayne Briscoe said.
The agreement was reached at a meeting of the Sun Valley/Ketchum subcommittee on marketing. Those present from Sun Valley were Briscoe and City Council members Keith Saks and Franz Suhadolnik. Attending from Ketchum were Mayor Nina Jonas and council members Michael David and Jim Slanetz.
Jonas said Briscoe proposed that the two subcommittees get together shortly after her inauguration in January.
“I thought it was a wonderful suggestion,” she said. “The conversation was very respectful and polite, and I appreciate his taking the initiative.”
The mayors said they expect the issue to go before the city councils this summer when budgets for the coming year are presented.
According to the news release, the amounts that each city is providing equal about 25 percent of their local-option-tax receipts. The sales taxes are levied on such items as hotel rooms, restaurant purchases and retail sales other than groceries.
