A 30-year-old Hailey man, with an extensive criminal record including a 2007 felony conviction for possession of a controlled substance, was sentenced Monday in Blaine County 5th District Court to five years in prison for conviction of two counts of possession of methamphetamine.
Emilio Valencia will be required to spend two years in prison before he is eligible for parole. While separate five-year sentences were ordered in the two counts against Valencia, Judge Robert J. Elgee ruled that the sentences be served concurrently, or at the same time.
Valencia also faces district court arraignment on Monday, March 10, for a third count of possession of methamphetamine against him. That case stemmed from a Jan. 4 arrest when Valencia was the occupant of a vehicle reported as suspicious in the Cutters subdivision area of Hailey.
The two cases in which sentence was pronounced on Monday are for charges filed against Valencia for arrests made on May 13, 2013, and on June 2, 2013.
Valencia pleaded guilty to the two counts of methamphetamine possession in December 2013. In exchange for his guilty pleas, several other charges were dismissed against him, including felony possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, misdemeanor driving under the influence, misdemeanor resisting arrest and two counts of misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia.
Valencia has been represented in the three cases against him by Hailey attorney Douglas Nelson, who was assigned as public defender.
