In a tight back-and-forth Northside Conference boys’ basketball game, the Murtaugh Red Devils opened some breathing space in the second quarter and held off the Community School Cutthroats by a 62-56 score Tuesday night.

Coach Mike Payne’s host Cutthroats (4-8, 2-5 league) put together one of their best offensive efforts of the 2013-14 season with three players in double figures—seniors Taylor Adler and Doug DuFur, and sophomore Daniel DuFur.

At the Fish Tank in Sun Valley, the Cutthroats cut into Murtaugh’s 12-point third-quarter lead and made the score 52-50 with two minutes remaining. The DuFur brothers combined for 13 of the 19 Cutthroat points in the fourth.

It was the fourth straight tight game played by the Cutthroats, who have lost by four, seven and six points along with a one-point road win.

Leading scorer Adler (17 points, 11 rebounds, 2 assists) paced the Cutthroats. Daniel DuFur (15 points, 3 rebounds, 4 steals, three 3-pointers) tallied all his points in the second half and Doug Dufur (11 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists) chipped in.

Others were Garrett Rawlings (5 points, 7 rebounds, 8 steals, 2 blocked shots), Reed Roudabush (4 points, 4 rebounds, 4 steals, 2 assists, 1 block), Alex Feldman (2 points, 1 block) and Keegan Whitelaw (2 points, 4 rebounds).

Leading Murtaugh was senior Kodey Baynes (14 points, 11 rebounds, 6 steals, 2 assists).

The Cutthroats visited Richfield Thursday and host Jackpot (Nev.) Monday, Feb. 10.
