Jason Spooner’s music is called soulful and playful with a bluesy roots-rock vibe. His band will be playing various venues this weekend.
The snow may have quit us this winter but the music never dies in the Wood River Valley.
Diversions for the musically inclined are numerous, and diverse, starting with the band from Texas known as Sphinx. It’s an electro-pop band with a unique sound in the vein of Imagine Dragons, MGMT and Fun. Hear Sphinx on Wednesday, Jan. 22, at 8 p.m. at the Sun Valley Brewery in Hailey. There is no cover charge.
BuckleRash performs Thursday, Jan. 23, at Whiskey Jacques’ in Ketchum at 9 p.m. Entry is $5.
Sun Valley Resort has been helping spread the news about talent coming into the valley, inviting artists to appear at the free venues of River Run and Warm Springs lodges through the winter.
T-Bird and the Breaks will play at River Run on Friday, Jan. 24, from 2:30-5:30 p.m.
Tony Holiday and The Velvetones racked up some groupies recently when they rocked River Run and they are coming back for two nights. The blues band will be at Sun Valley Brewery on Friday, Jan. 24, at 8:30 p.m. (no cover) and then with the Jason Spooner Band at Whiskey Jacques’ in Ketchum on Saturday, Jan. 25, at 9 p.m. Entry for the Ketchum show is $5.
Tony Holiday at The Velvetones are on a three-month tour, stopping here after a four-year absence. Holiday is a rising figure in the national blues harmonica scene. He’s recorded with blues hall-of-famer Lazy Lester and Adam Gussow. They’ll bring blues and dirty rock and roll.
Jason Spooner Band will also perform at the River Run Lodge on Saturday, Jan. 25, at 3 p.m. and at Warm Springs Lodge on Sunday, Jan. 26, at 3 p.m. There will be no cover at either event. This four-piece roots-rock band from Portland, Maine, is also touring and will show up to play the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah, along the way.
The quartet stands out with an interesting signature sound appealing to a wide range of audiences by seamlessly blending a variety of musical influences and flavors into a cohesive and extremely listenable and danceable experience. Folk, roots/Americana, blues, groove-oriented rock with some elements of jazz, reggae and soul are all accounted for here.
Over the last few years, this dynamic band has performed with acts as varied as B.B. King, John Mayer, Jackson Browne, Michael Franti & Spearhead, Ray LaMontagne, Susan Tedeschi, Jackie Greene, G. Love, Guster, Blues Traveler, Peter Rowan and Sara Bareilles.
And finally, Natural Roots, bringing island reggae music with talent from New Zealand, Tonga and Samoa, will be at the Sun Valley Brewery on Friday, Jan. 31, at 9 p.m. There is a $5 cover.
Farther south, South of Bellevue will play at 9:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 24, at the Silver Dollar Saloon in Bellevue. The show is free and patrons can use a shuttle home to Bellevue or Hailey at no charge.
