Talk about one tiny spark. The simply decorated bags with a single light inside began as a neighborhood’s way of raising money for the Hunger Coalition in 2005, and since then, $30,000 has been raised, $1 at a time.
The ninth annual Luminary Celebration for The Hunger Coalition is now under way. Luminaries can be purchased from Lee Dabney at her home in the Northridge subdivision of Hailey, the Sage School in Hailey, Isadora’s in Bellevue and The Dollhouse in Hailey.
This year, Woodside Elementary third-graders decorated luminary bags with their art teacher Joni Cashman that will be used in their holiday performance and are available for sale. Each child was able to take home a luminary to light with their family, thanks to an anonymous benefactor who purchased them on behalf of the third-grade class ($75 in total).
The Sage School middle-school students have helped with organization, sales and distribution of the luminaries for the past four years as part of their service curriculum.
The luminaries are lit the Sunday before Christmas—this year Sunday, Dec. 22—at dusk, and set out in front of participants’ homes.
“They are a beautiful and easy way to celebrate the season and raise funds to support those in need in our community,” Dabney said.
