The Life Church in Hailey will present a free theatrical re-enactment of the biblical story of the birth of Jesus Christ on Sunday, Dec. 22, at dusk, followed by Christmas carol singing and prayer.
The “live nativity” musical performance will feature a cast of 50, including actors portraying the mother and father of Jesus, the “three wise men” of biblical tradition, and a cast of singers and musicians.
“It is theater in the round,” said Evelyn Albrecht, the play’s director. “It is a way for those of the Christian persuasion to put a little of Christ back into the Christmas celebration.”
The play will take place from 5:30-7 p.m. at the corner of Roberta McKercher Boulevard and River Street in Hailey, just north of Albertsons grocery store. There will be hay-bale seating and fires for warmth.
The show is free, but attendees are asked to bring contributions for local food banks.
The play will begin with Joseph and Mary traveling to Bethlehem. It will feature a dramatic presentation by the angel Gabriel, followed by a visit by the three wise men, on horseback and followed by an entourage.
“It all ends with a celebration of the gift giving to Jesus,” Albrecht said. “If there is any need for prayer, we will assist in that also. We are just here to glorify God.”
Joseph and Mary will be played by Ben and Lacie Figueiredo. The three wise men will be played by Tom Andersen, Jeff Lewallen and Larry Weinberger. The baby Jesus will be played by Wyatt Burkett, age 4 months.
“We will have him all bundled up,” Albrecht said.
