Galena Lodge stages 41st Winterstart on Sunday

Weekend starts Saturday with Ski Free Day

Get ready to head north of Ketchum on Sunday, Dec. 15 for the 41st annual Winterstart cross-country ski races hosted by Galena Lodge and the Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation (SVSEF) Nordic team.

Conditions permitting, freestyle 10-kilometer and 5k races featuring wave starts of four skiers per minute for the Senior, Masters and Junior classes will be staged in Senate Meadows near the lodge.

There are also 2.5k courses for Youth and Novice classes. All participants must have North Valley Trails passes which will be sold on the day of the race at Galena Lodge.

Register inside Galena Lodge Sunday from 8:30-10:30 a.m. Racing starts at 11 a.m. for Youth/Novice, followed by the 5k and 10k races. Awards will be presented inside the lodge after the end of racing.

Last December, below-zero temperatures greeted Nordic skiers at Galena Lodge but 90 participants still greeted the season for Winterstart racing led by SVSEF Gold Team racer Patrick Johnson (22:31) on the 10k course. Brooke Hovey (26:20) paced the women.

Free skiing, Demo Days

This Saturday, Galena Lodge Ski School hosts free “Learn to Ski” clinics from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the hour.

The 30-minute lessons are designed for beginning skiers to get a head start on their Nordic technique. There are free North Valley Trail passes and complimentary equipment during the lessons.

Saturday is also Demo Days at Galena Lodge from 10-3. You can sample equipment from Salomon, Fischer, Atomic, Rossignol, Madshus and Swix. Experts from the Elephant’s Perch and Backwoods will guide you along the way.

The Saturday events offer free skiing all day on the Blaine County Recreation District’s Nordic trail system, including the Galena Lodge trails and the Harriman Trail.
