The Blaine County School District board of trustees has issued a request for proposals seeking an executive search team to assist with finding a new district superintendent.
“We want an inclusive, professional, transparent search that attracts the best candidates from across the state and country,” board Chairman Paul Bates stated in a news release. “As a board, we are committed to bringing the best and most qualified candidates to our school district. We feel unanimously that the process we have developed will give us that outcome.”
The school board has promised that public input will be accepted throughout the process. According to the board, there will be several opportunities for the public to be involved.
The search for a new superintendent follows the termination of the contract in September with former Superintendent Lonnie Barber, who served for four years and before that was assistant superintendent for two years. According to the School District, Barber agreed to the separation but was given a buy-out package worth $600,000.
Assistant Superintendent John Blackman is currently serving as interim superintendent.
The deadline for firms to submit proposals is Dec. 2. On Dec. 4, the school board plans to meet in executive session to review proposals and narrow the list to three to five finalists.
The public is invited to a meeting on Thursday, Dec. 12, at the Minnie Moore Room at the Community Campus to hear interviews with the finalists and provide input to the board. The open meeting is scheduled to last from 4-7:30 p.m. Immediately after, the board plans to go into executive session to select a firm for the search.
According to the news release, community involvement will also be sought in a public meeting to identify desirable characteristics of a future superintendent and in the final selection process. “Hiring a superintendent is one of the most important responsibilities of the board of trustees,” stated Vice Chairman Shawn Bennion. “Leadership is crucial to our future success. This position needs to reflect the desires of all our stakeholders, which is why public involvement is crucial during the search process.”
