2 apply for vacant school board seat

Panel meets next week to interview applicants

Thursday’s 3 p.m. deadline came and went with only two applicants for the Blaine County School District board of trustees Zone 5 seat, vacated in June with the resignation of former Trustee Don Nurge.
District patrons Elizabeth Schwerdtle and Janet Evans submitted letters of interest. Schwerdtle, who describes herself as a “school district supporter,” has been involved for several years in district issues and has often been critical of district decisions and policies.
Evans, a businesswoman, is part owner of Evans Plumbing.
Both applicants issued brief statements Thursday to the Idaho Mountain Express as to why they would like to serve on the school board.
“I have always believed in the importance of education and that the best outcome for students comes from a genuine partnership between a community and its school district,” Schwerdtle stated. “To represent the people of Blaine County and help all of its children get the best possible education is a significant privilege and responsibility.”
“I enjoy serving in the community,” Evans stated. “As a mother of three children currently enrolled in the school district, and a business owner with my husband, I am interested in seeking a balance between providing excellent education opportunities and being fiscally responsible in these challenging economic times.”
Schwerdtle and Evans both live in or near Hailey, but are within the boundaries of Zone 5, which mostly encompasses the east Ketchum and Sun Valley areas but extends south to include an area in northeast Hailey.
The board of trustees has scheduled a special meeting for 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 17, to interview both applicants.
The new board member will serve until June 2015 and can run for election in May of that year for a four-year term on the board.
