Kings shooter Thornton coming to HSB camp

Pro basketball player in Hailey

Hot Shot Basketball Camps founder and director Carson Sofro is proud to bring National Basketball Association shooting guard Marcus Thornton to the three-day HSB summer camp in Hailey July 29-31.
Sofro said Sunday, “Marcus Thornton of the Sacramento Kings is coming in two weeks to headline our camp. It’s the first time we’ve really had a recognizable NBA name at this camp. There are 15 spots left.”
Four-year NBA pro Thornton, 26, a 6-4 guard from Baton Rouge, La. and Louisiana State University, has played for the Sacramento Kings for the last three seasons after starting his NBA career with New Orleans.
Playing mainly off the bench, Thornton averaged 12.7 ppg in 2012-13 for a guard-heavy Kings team (28-54) that missed the playoffs this past season, placing 13th of 15 teams in the Western Conference.
Thornton started slowly for the Kings this past season but found his stride after the All-Star break, averaging 14.6 ppg in 28 second-half games and shooting a hot 47% from the field. He has played 269 NBA games in his career, averaging 14.3 ppg with a 43.8% field goal percentage, 36.5% from 3-point range and a free throw shooting percentage of 83.2%.
Sofro said, “Marcus represents everything our program is about. He has come from very humble beginnings and has had to overcome tremendous odds to achieve the great success he enjoys today. I know his story will be an inspiration to all of our athletes.”
A former hoops star at the Community School of Sun Valley and the University of Redlands in California, Sofro is operating the eighth summer of Hot Shot Camps (register at hsbcamps.com/camps/hailey).
“Elevate Your Game” is the camp slogan. Boys and girls are welcome. The presence of coaches/pros like Thornton and Mike Harris is one of the camp’s big attractions. For more details email info@hsbcamps.com.
The Hailey full-day camp for boys and girls entering grades 4-12 is Monday, July 29 through Wednesday, July 31, at the high school in Hailey. Times are 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Cost is $175, same as last year. Participants are separated into groups based on age and playing ability.
Running in the same July 29-31 timeframe and at the same location is the morning clinic for grades K-3, from 9 a.m.-noon. Cost is $99. Fundamental drills and contests are emphasized for the little kids. Registrations are accepted online on a first-come, first-served basis.
Included in the fee for each camp is a free camp t-shirt, basketball and giveaways from camp sponsors. Those in the full-day camp receive a detailed evaluation.
