Zimmerman acted in self-defense

I was very impressed with the quality of your small-town newspaper on my recent visit to Sun Valley.  However, I take exception to your editorial of July 19, “Deadly, tragic, and unnecessary”.
After having watched several hours of the trial, I don’t believe that George Zimmerman is a racist as your editorial insinuated. Was Trayvon Martin being profiled? Absolutely, but not necessarily as a black person.  Zimmerman, right or wrong, probably thought he was helping his community by keeping his eye on suspicious strangers. He did not start a confrontation with Martin but was trying to watch where he was going so he could tell the police, who were on their way.
When Martin came out of the bushes and confronted Zimmerman, Zimmerman should have run away, but he didn’t and ended up with a broken nose and Martin banging his head on concrete. I think what happened was a case of self-defense, not “hold your ground”.
If the majority of people committing crimes, white or black, are wearing hooded sweatshirts, cover themselves with tattoos, and have to use one hand to hold up their pants, they are going to be profiled by people both black and white.  While you probably don’t see much that would cause you to profile in Sun Valley as we don’t here in New Hampshire, spend a few of your winters in south St. Petersburg, Florida. It might give you a different perspective.
