“Senior Night” football has arrived for the Wood River High School 11-man football team and the Carey High School eight-man football squad—both playing their final home games.
Coming off a forfeit loss to Burley, the Wolverines (1-6, 0-3 league) will have a challenge today at 7 p.m. with the arrival of the red-hot Jerome Tigers (3-4, 2-1) for a Great Basin Conference tussle at Phil Homer Field. Youthful Wood River has only six seniors this year—Cooper Bailey, Eron Bates, Brian Trejo, Jon Reigle, Beau Boss and Cody Richmond.
Jerome is coming off an upset 45-33 home win over Minico (4-4, 2-2) and is also looking ahead to a Nov. 1 date with Burley (5-2, 2-1) that should settle the second state playoff berth from the GBC. Twin Falls (6-1, 4-0) needs only a home win over Burley tonight to clinch the GBC title and top seed.
Carey (3-3, 1-2 league) hosts Richfield (2-3, 0-3) tonight at 7 p.m. at Derrick Parke Memorial Field in a Sawtooth Conference West meeting.
Christian Zarate and Tori Alvarez are the only two seniors for Carey, which needs a win over Richfield to secure the No. 3 West division seed for the Nov. 1 state play-in games. The Panthers lost 50-0 at Lighthouse Christian (7-0, 3-0) last Friday. Lighthouse visits Dietrich (7-0, 3-0) tonight for the West title.
