Cyclocross returns to Hailey this weekend

Crosstoberfest coming at Old Cutters Oct. 18-19

If you’re a cyclist and it’s October, you must be thinking about cyclocross.

The 10th annual Idaho Crosstoberfest cyclocross races are planned for Friday and Saturday, Oct. 18-19 in Hailey, based out of Powerhouse Pub and Bike Studio with racing at Old Cutters Park. The event includes a craft beer festival.

Cyclocross events usually occur in autumn and early winter. They are short races, usually under 60 minutes in length, during which the cyclists make laps on short tracks with challenging terrain and obstacles that occasionally force the bikers to dismount and carry.

Powerhouse’s Billy Olson, a former professional road bike racer, said about his growing grass-roots bike competition, “This event is just a lot of fun.”

Time trials for start position begin at 4:30 p.m. Oct. 18 at Old Cutters Park. The time trials are free of charge, provided you sign up for Saturday’s main event. Entry is $20 per person.

     Categories are Men 1/2/3 and 35-plus, Men’s Cat. 4 and 45-plus, Women, Juniors and 1st Timers, Youth 12-and-under, 9-and-under and 6-and-under.

Saturday’s first- and second-flight races take place at 11 a.m. and 12 noon, followed by the Shimano Youth Series events from 12:50-1:15 p.m., and finally by the third and fourth flights at 1:30 p.m. and 2:40 p.m.
